The City of Norfolk Municipal Internship Program is a highly competitive program designed to enhance students’ professional and interpersonal skills, introduce talented college students to careers in local government, and provide valuable work experience. Norfolk also offers several training and development opportunities for interns. 

Norfolk interns work eight weeks, 40 hours per week, beginning in June.  Undergraduate students earn $8.50 per hour and graduate students earn $10.65 per hour.  Norfolk offers a variety of intern assignments. Student interns have worked in the following city departments:

 

 
  • Public Health       
  • Human Resources
  • Norfolk Police Department
  • Office of the City Auditor
  • Information Technology
  • Finance
  • Neighborhood Preservation
  • Budget
  • Mayor’s Office
  • Recreation, Parks, Open Space
  • Planning
  • Grants Management

Requirements:

 
 
  • College junior or above      
  • Good academic standing
  • Currently attending college
  • Working in a course of study relevant for the intern position      
  • Preference will be given to Norfolk residents

Applications will be accepted March 16th, 2009 through May 1st, 2009.  To be considered for an internship position, students must complete the online application process and be able to provide official college transcripts.
