Discover Norfolk Water From the Reservoir to the Tap

The Norfolk Department of Utilities provides water to more than 820,000 people in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, portions of Chesapeake, and U.S. naval facilities.

The City of Norfolk owns nine reservoirs from which we receive raw water. Additional water sources include the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers and four deep wells located in Suffolk. Water treated for Virginia Beach is supplied by Lake Gaston.

Raw water is pumped from Norfolk’s reservoirs to one of its two water treatment plants.

After treatment, drinking water is pumped on demand to taps around the city or to one of Norfolk’s storage facilities. Norfolk has seven ground storage tanks, two elevated tanks and two underground clear wells. Storage facilities can hold up to 44 million gallons of water.

Norfolk Pure drinking water is available at taps around the city 24 hours a day!
