EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Human Resources/Organizational Development Unit (HR/OD) provides personnel and administrative support functions for the Department of Human Services. The mission of HR/OD is to provide efficient, effective, knowledgeable and reliable services, which responds to the needs of all employees, retirees and the public in a manner consistent with the expectations of the department and the City of Norfolk.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Norfolk Department of Human Services is pleased to offer internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students in a human services curriculum of an accredited school, university, or college.

You must meet the following requirements:

  • Be currently attending college as a college junior or above.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Working in a course of study relevant for the intern position such as: Social Work, Sociology, Counseling, Psychology, Criminal Justice, etc.
  • Pass a criminal and child protective services (CPS) background check.

Internship Program Objectives
The Norfolk Department of Human Services recognizes the important role we play in serving as a training site for area colleges and universities. Where feasible, we encourage supervisory staff to make use of students to serve as volunteers within agency programs and to foster the workforce development efforts of institutions of higher learning via internships.

Internships offer us the opportunity to ensure that future professionals will enter the human services field with a sense of responsibility, dedication, and commitment; ready to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve. The hard work and energy that we put into making your internship experience successful will pay off in dedicated professionals who may, one day, wish to return to our department as employees.
