Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)-funded projects in
Norfolk
UNDER CONSTRUCTION:
Hampton Boulevard
Grade Separation
Estimated:
Completion: November 2012
Estimated Total Project Costs: $102 Million
This project
includes the construction
of a new underpass to remove the existing at-grade conflict with Norfolk Southern/Norfolk Portsmouth Beltline
railroad near U.S. Navy Base. A
temporary 6-lane
detour roadway was constructed and is open to all
traffic. The general project area is Hampton Boulevard
between Rogers Avenue
and B Avenue. This detour road was
built
to maintain the same
capacity as the existing Hampton Boulevard
for motorists travelling to NIT and U.S. Naval Base. The
future permanent roadway/underpass that is currently
under construction adjacent to the detour road
will also provide six lanes for through traffic, a 13-foot median
with left turn lanes, improved roadway lighting, signals, drainage,
landscaping, bike lanes, curb and gutter and sidewalks. Other
improvements will include access into US Navy Fleet Recreational
Park, Pier 3 Access and improvements to the
Maple Shade and Greenbrier side streets.
Ongoing work over the next few months includes HRSD/Utility work,
railroad work, concrete piles, underpass excavation, and stormwater
pump station work. The City is actively working with VDOT, the
Navy, and NIT on this major roadway project. This project is
administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and
will continue through early 2013.

throughout project and the Department of Public Works continues to
work on improving traffic movement through this heavily travelled
corridor. Construction on Va. Beach Boulevard
between Reel Street
and Newtown Road will continue through Spring
2011.

roadway project involves the creation of a limited access break and
modification of the highway. A new traffic signal will be
constructed at the future entrance of the
Lake
Wright East Office Park
as an add-alternate to the primary roadway contract and/or by a
future developer. The roadway modifications are to
support the future developable parcel on the north side of Northampton Boulevard.
Construction is anticipated to start on-site this Spring 2011 and
continue through Spring 2012. This construction project
will be administered by the City of Norfolk Department of Public
Works.
Lowery Rd. Signal at Walmart/Farm Fresh
The Lowery Road
Signal Installation at Wal-Mart project will construct a new traffic
signal on Lowery Road at the
existing entrances of Wal-Mart and Farm Fresh just east of Military Highway.
In addition to the
new traffic signal, pedestrian improvements will be included to
accommodate pedestrians crossing
Lowery Road and to serve the existing HRT
bus stop. In conjunction with this new traffic signal, City funds
will be used for the paving of
Lowery Road between Kempsville Road and Military Highway.
The Department of Public Works plans to advertise this construction
project in early 2011, pending final easements.
Construction is estimated to start this Spring 2011 and be complete
by Spring 2012. This construction project will
be administered by the City of Norfolk Department of Public Works.
Princess Anne Rd./Sewells Point Rd. Intersection Improvements
The goal of the
project is to improve traffic safety at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Sewells Point Road
in order to facilitate large truck movements into and out of Norfolk Industrial Park. To accomplish this,
the work will involve changing the turning radius at the southeast
and southwest corners, installing new traffic signal improvements
including a new mast arm traffic signal, pedestrian improvements
including pedestrian push buttons, associated paving at the south
side of the intersection, and associated storm drainage work.
During
construction, traffic along the south side of the intersection will
be detoured onto Azalea Garden Road
to allow the contractor to safely work on Sewells Point Road. No detours
are planned for the north side of the intersection. Both
eastbound and westbound
Princess Anne Road
will remain open to motorists throughout construction with potential
single lane closures as needed during construction. This
construction project will be administered by VDOT and is expected to
start in early 2011 and continue through late 2011.
